全球唯一“城市\建筑”双年展
THE ONE AND ONLY BIENNALE
OF URBANISM\ARCHITECTURE IN THE WORLD

The decision to make Nantou Old Town the main venue fully demonstrates the core features of UABB, namely, the origin, external inputs and its prospects.2017 UABB (Shenzhen) combines the historical and cultural resources with the contemporary urban design concepts. It is thus able to carry on the culture, build cities and towns with well-preserved historical memories and regional characteristics, and continue implementing the mission of Shenzhen as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), a window and a laboratory for the reform and opening up in China.

With over 1,700 years’ of history, Nantou Old Town covered a vast area of present day Hong Kong, Macao, Dongguan and Zhuhai since Jin Dynasty, and hence was reputed as the origin of Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao. Today, the old town is a symbiosis of a historic city, a typical urban village shaped by the drastic urbanization and an obsolete industrial district. The superposition of these three forms is an epitome of this robust and thriving city, as it integrates the history and the industrial and economic development since China’s reform and opening up and vividly depicts the rapid development of Shenzhen as an emerging global city.  This year UABB (Shenzhen) will, by means of urban curation, envision a brand new prospect for Nantou Old Town, i.e. a global and future-oriented example of coexistence.  The transformation with a series of exhibition spaces and the interventions of architecture, art, and events will offer a great opportunity for alternative experiment with the regeneration of the old town and urban village, thus a long term plan could regularly take shape to improve the urban spaces and its quality.
